Directions for prevention (12) Evacuate immediate when you sense steam or shaking
Volcanos are beautiful when looking up from the foot of the mountain, but they are also exceptional from the peak. That is why mountain climbing is a popular activity. There are 111 active volcanos throughout Japan, and in Tohoku alone, there are 18 including Mt. Zao (Zao Mountain Range) situated between Miyagi and Yamagata Prefectures, and Mt. Azuma (Azuma Mountain Range) in Fukushima.
The eruption cycle of most volcanoes are unknown and it is difficult to predict. When climbing a mountain, it is best to check the Japan Meteorological Agency website for the latest volcanic activity information.
It cannot be said that a mountain with volcanic alert level 1 ”caution that this is an active volcano” is safe. Mt. Ontake, situated between Nagano and Gifu Prefectures was rated level 1, but erupted in September 2014.
Even while climbing a mountain, eruption may be occurring without our notice if the situation near the crater is not visible. When abnormalities such as steam or shaking is sensed, start evacuating immediately and move as far away from the crater as possible.
