Directions for prevention (26) Bedroom furniture: Pay attention to placement

In the Great Hanshin Earthquake, furniture became a deadly weapon. The earthquake occurred at 5:46 a.m. on January 17, 1995, when many people were sleeping. It is estimated that about 80% of the 6,434 victims were crushed to death under collapsed buildings or toppled furniture.

Even if the house withstands the shaking, you could be injured or killed by falling furniture. Once large shaking begins, there is only so much you can do. If you are hit in your sleep, it will be even more difficult to take action to protect yourself.

For this reason, it is important to prepare for an earthquake before it occurs. Reduce the amount of furniture in the bedroom, use low furniture and place it in a place where it won't tip over onto the sleeping area. Place down items that are likely to fall.

Remember, evacuation begins indoors. Keep hallways and entrances clear of anything that may topple or fall, and make sure there is a clear path to the outdoors.
