Directions for prevention (31) Act quickly near rivers

We are now in the season of heavy rain damage, with torrential rains recorded in many areas in early June 2023. Be careful of sudden flooding of small and narrow rivers.

In August 2016, typhoon No. 10 flooded the Omotogawa river, which runs through the mountains of Iwaizumi Town, Iwate Prefecture. Approximately 430 households in the town were temporarily isolated, and nine people were killed in an elderly care facility that was hit by the muddy waters.

Rain continued to fall from noon on that day, and the water level downstream rose by about 3.4 meters in two hours from 6:00 p.m. Thinking "it's still okay" can lead to you being too late to escape.

In the event of heavy rain, check the risk of rising water and flood forecast on the real-time flood risk map of the Japan Meteorological Agency's KIKIKURU website, and check live camera images and water levels on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's website “River Disaster Prevention Information." It is convenient to register your home and workplace.

It is important to gather information and evacuate as soon as possible before you are unable to move.
