Directions for prevention (32) Continue gathering information even after the weather improves

As typhoons and fronts pass and the rains are past their peak, we can all breathe a sigh of relief. But don't let your guard down. The danger of disaster still remains.

There may be heavy rains upstream of the river. There is also a risk of large amounts of water flowing downstream. During Typhoon No. 19 in 2019, the Yoshida river's levee collapsed in the town of Ogo, Miyagi Prefecture, two hours after the special heavy rain warning was lifted.

In the case of long rains, even if the rainfall is not very heavy, the possibility of water-filled slopes collapsing increases when the rainfall exceeds the standard. When a mudslide occurred in Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture, in July 2021, there was no heavy rainfall.

Even if the weather improves, check disaster prevention information on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's “River Disaster Prevention Information” website and the real-time landslide risk of the Japan Meteorological Agency's KIKIKURU website. If you have any acquaintances upstream, it might be a good idea to call them to gather information.
